Women’s History Month spotlight: Women in Tech leader seeks transparency in university innovation ownership and due process review.
ATLANTA – An Atlanta technology founder is calling for transparency in public university intellectual property and innovation ownership policy after filing a provisional patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and undergoing an employment review process.
Kierra Emerson, founder of Pipeline Developer Research Labs and former Marketing Manager within Georgia State University’s Graduate School, filed a provisional USPTO patent application in January 2026 titled “System and Method for Automated Marketing Funnel Classification and Data Transformation.”
Emerson states the automation and data analytics system was independently conceived in Summer 2023 and implemented in Winter 2024.
Following an internal grievance review, the university upheld her termination, referencing Employee Handbook section 1001.1 concerning unauthorized access or alteration of information.
Emerson has formally requested documentation supporting the findings cited during the review process. She states that grievance materials did not include forensic audit logs or documented technical analyses establishing intentional misconduct.
“This matter raises broader questions about intellectual property ownership, innovation policy, and due process within public universities,” Emerson said. “When independently developed technology intersects with institutional systems, clear policy interpretation and documented evidence are essential.”
According to review materials, the automation systems and analytics reporting pipelines referenced were not expressly included within her formal job classification.
Emerson has retained counsel to evaluate intellectual property, employment policy, and procedural considerations. No civil litigation has been filed, and the matter remains under review.
“Public universities serve as stewards of both innovation and due process,” said Levon Austin, an Atlanta resident and Georgia State University alumnus. “When intellectual property and professional reputation are involved, transparency strengthens institutional trust.”
Emerson states her objective is documented clarity regarding innovation ownership standards and evidentiary procedures used in the institutional review process.
“As automation systems and data analytics technologies become central to higher education operations,” she added, “clear intellectual property policy and consistent due process standards are critical.”
